I love the TV show “How I Met Your Mother.” Actually, I love watching my daughters love the show, their laughter is infectious, but that’s another story.
So in a recent (at least in the current series on air) episode, there was a funny sequence where all of the characters had a blind spot. Of course they all believed that they were pretty close to perfect, and as friends the group would point out the blind spots of the individual. E.g. Ted couldn’t pronounce “Chameleon,” Lilly couldn’t throw accurately, etc.
The thing about blind spots is they’re invisible to us.
What you don’t want, is to head into an interview, with a glaring blind spot that scuppers any chance you have of getting your dream job. It could be an unconscious habit, like tapping your foot incessantly, or a social skill, like interrupting someone before letting them finish their sentence.
How do you know if you have a blind spot? You probably don’t
So in your preparation for interviews (whether over the phone or face to face), practice with some close friends. Ask them to point out anything that you do that could be annoying, irritating, or creates a bad impression.
Take the feedback graciously.
Thank your friend.
Now that you’re conscious of the blind spot, work on using, changing, or eradicating it.
You’ll be glad you did.
